Technology has completely changed the world we live in. Technology is changing at a very rapid rate. People mostly prefer spending time on internet. It has both positive as well as negative impacts on our society. The various sectors in which technology has changed our lives are as follows:
1. Commuting
I am pretty sure that most of the people have used google maps at least once in their lifetime. It uses artificial intelligence to analyse the speed and movement of traffic at any particular location and time. Maps tell us which is the fastest route to reach our location. And if that’s not all, guess what, it also gives you the navigation feature which guides you to your preferred location by using voice commands. This saves time as well as money.
How can we forget the famous ride sharing apps such as Uber and Ola cabs? These apps help us a lot by saving your time and we get cabs at our convenience and all this is possible because of machine learning. The Uber and Ola apps both determine the price and travel time before boarding the cab.
Artificial intelligence surely has impacted this sector. Self-driving cars are surely going to change the future of commuting. Imagine travelling in a car with no driver. This technology will allow physically handicapped people to use cars without depending upon any driver.
2. Communication
(a) Email: Email stands for electronic mail. Emails have improved communication a lot. Now we can send any piece of information through an email and it happens within a fraction of a second. It saves us a lot of time and effort in transferring messages. But the coolest thing about emails is the spam filter. Imagine your mail box flooded with unnecessary emails which are completely useless. Well, the spam filter is the saviour which uses machine learning algorithms in order to learn constantly as spammers constantly update themselves. What more can you expect? Google uses machine learning algorithms to smartly categorize emails into primary, social, and promotional inboxes as well as labelling emails as important.
The best part is that google has incorporated smart reply to inbox and due to this, your inbox replies to emails for your behalf.
(b) Social Media: I think almost everyone has at least heard about social media. More than 2 billion people are present on social media currently. The most famous social networking website is Facebook. Whenever we upload photos on Facebook, faces are automatically highlighted and suggestions come up to tag a particular person. The photo below perfectly shows how Facebook uses facial recognition feature:
Facebook has developed it’s A.I. to such an extent that if you pass by a person and if you operate your Facebook account, then in the ‘People you may know’ section, the profile of that particular person appears.
Also, our newsfeed in Facebook gets personalized and we only see the content which is interesting and relevant to our interests.
Similarly, Pinterest uses computer vision, in order to identify objects in images and recommends visually similar pins.
The most trending use of Machine Learning in social media is the facial filters used in snapchat which adjusts accordingly when the face of a person moves.
3. Learning Industry
Learning Industry has surely benefitted from the latest technology. Gone are those days when people only relied on books to get information. Nowadays people have started reading articles online. People have started giving online coaching by making videos and publishing notes online. Many online learning resources are available. People who were earlier not able to go out to study in foreign countries, have the option of watching videos posted online to acquire information. Moreover, online coaching is also self-paced which means a student can learn according to his/her own pace.
4. Online shopping
There is absolutely no doubt that online shopping saves a lot of time and effort of the customer when it comes to purchasing anything. It is also available 24/7 which means that people can purchase any item at their own pace and convenience. Any person can choose what brand they want, what is their size, their preferred colour and so on. Also, you have much more variety when it comes to shopping online as shopping online gives you larger reachability and larger collection to browse from
5. Advertising
You might have observed that when you buy a product online or view it, suggestions and advertisements start popping up at the website. Well, this is how marketing is being done online. This is the age of digital marketing. Digital marketing is the marketing of products or services using digital technologies. Various digital platforms such as Gmail, Facebook, Twitter are used in order to sell a product online as majority of people in the world use internet and spend their quality time on the internet.
6. Banking and online payments
Modern technology has surely saved our time when it comes to making payments. Now you can make payments online just by clicking on buttons. You can also make payments through credit and debit cards just by swiping the card on the machine. The daily transaction volume is too high for humans to manually review each transaction. So artificial intelligence is used in order to identify which transactions are fraud and which are not fraud.
